What's my tyre size? And which tyres are best for my car? Find all your tyre size questions answered with our help today.

How to find out your tyre size

Your specific tyre size can be found in your vehicle handbook, or on the wall of the tyre. It will be broken down into a set of numbers and letters, which translates to the accurate size of your tyre. For example:

Tyre markings

This shows the tyre sidewall markings which indicate the size of the tyre broken down into separate sections. But what does it mean?

  • 205: this is the width of the tyre's cross section, known as the section width. This is measured in millimetres.
  • 45: this is the aspect ratio. This looks at the tyre's width to height, as a percentage. For example, if the tyre has a short sidewall compared to width, this could mean it has better handling and a more stable ride, but may be noisier and a bit more of a pricey tyre.
  • R: this is the rim diameter. The R means the tyre has radial-ply construction, which is common in most tyres.
  • 17: this is the rim diameter. The R means the tyre has radial-ply construction, which is common in most tyres.

Often, there can also be another sequence of numbers - these numbers (for example: 92H) show the load rating (92: the maximum load each tyre can support) and the speed rating (H: the maximum speed the tyre can carry the load rating).

So now we've translated the markings into measurements, you can find out the exact tyre size for your vehicle.

Which tyres should I choose

Although this depends on tyre size predominantly, considering what type of driving you'll be doing is important when choosing which tyres are best for your car.

  • Short distances - safety and economy tyres are the best bet for short distance driving e.g. to and from school, to work and home.
  • Motorway driving - low noise, fuel efficient and comfortable tyres are a good choice for motorway driving.
  • Sports cars - high performance tyres, with precision handling and fantastic traction.
