Bank Holiday Car Checks

28th April 2016

Getting away this bank holiday weekend? Make sure your vehicle is ready for the journey with a few small car checks before you set off!

Tyres

It is important that you check the condition of your tyres before setting off, to avoid the possibility of tyre failure on the road – you can do this by visually inspecting your tyres for damage such as cuts, lumps or bulges.

Check your tread depth before a long journey as this affects your safety on the road. If your tyres are below 1.6mm they are under the legal minimum and could result in a fine of up to £2,500 per tyre. The Malvern Tyres Group, however, would recommend that you replace your tyres once tread drops below 3mm as this has a negative impact on gripping and handling capabilities.

In addition, you should check your tyre pressures before any long journey. If you are travelling with a heavier load than usual, you will need to adjust your tyre pressures as recommended in your vehicle handbook. If they are wrong, you will use more fuel and wear your tyres out more rapidly.

Engine Fluids

Engine oil keeps your vehicle’s engine lubricated enabling it to run efficiently. Check that your engine oil meets a sufficient level using your dipstick when the engine is cool. If it does not, follow the instructions in your vehicle handbook for topping it up.

Take a look at your engine coolant level before heading off as this is what prevents your engine from overheating. If it is below the required level, top it up with the water/antifreeze combination recommended by your vehicle handbook.

Wipers and Screen Wash

It is important that you constantly have a clear, unobstructed view of the road no matter the conditions, so you need to make sure that your wipers and windscreen are in good condition and your screen wash is topped up.

Inspect your windscreen for damage such as chips or cracks and have it repaired as soon as possible. Even if it seems minor, these cracks could increase in size during your journey and may take your attention away from the road.

Take a look at your windscreen wipers and replace them if they are damaged or worn. Also ensure that there is enough liquid in your screen wash compartment and top up as necessary. This is important when it comes to removing mud, grime or water when driving.

Lights and Mirrors

Make sure that you can see and others will be able to see you. For this reason, you should check that all of your lights are working and that you can see clearly out of your mirrors. It might be a good idea to wash or wipe all mirrors and lights to further enhance visibility.

Boot

Take any unnecessary items out of your vehicle as heavier loads increase fuel consumption, and remember to pack the following:

  • Bottled water – both to drink and to use to top up your engine coolant if absolutely necessary
  • First aid kit – in case you or your passengers require attention when you are away from a pharmacy or hospital
  • Spare mobile phone or an in-car charger to ensure that you will be able to contact others if necessary

If you have any concerns about the condition of your vehicle or tyres, make sure that you make an appointment with your local Malvern Tyres Group branch before setting off on a long journey.

Enjoy the bank holiday weekend and stay safe on the road.
