A guide to all season tyres

What are all season tyres?

All season tyres are otherwise known as all-weather and year-round tyres. All season tyres are designed to be functional whatever the weather. They include elements of both summer and winter tyres to create an all-weather tyre that can be used come rain or shine. They are made of an intermediate rubber compound, which means a change in weather conditions will not affect the tyre's performance. Additionally, all season tyres are designed with sipes in the tread to minimise any effects from heavier rainfall.

All weather tyres are perfect for those living in countries with mild climates, such as the UK, as they are most effective in climates that don't undergo dramatic seasonal changes. In countries with hot summers and extreme winters, using separate winter tyres and summer tyres would be more suitable.

What's the difference between normal tyres and all season tyres?

Summer, winter and all-season tyres have differences that make them suitable for different weather conditions.

All season tyres vs winter tyres

Winter tyres are built for use in temperatures under 7°C. When used in temperatures above 7°C, winter tyres wear faster, as the rubber is softer in the heat. All weather tyres are made from a rubber compound that is optimised to suit all temperatures.

All season tyres might be suitable for all temperatures, but are all season tyres good in snow? Well, they do perform better than standard summer tyres in snow, but if you're driving in snow and ice regularly, you should opt for winter tyres.

All season tyres vs summer tyres

Summer tyres work well in both wet and dry conditions and perform best in temperatures over 7°C. However, due to their tyre tread patterns, they can't effectively grip the road in cold or icy conditions, which can become dangerous. All seasons tyres have the flexibility to perform well in both summer and winter conditions.

Benefits of all season tyres

All season tyres offer those living in mild weathered countries the ability to keep the same tyres all year round. Although the hybrid design can compromise your driving experience in extreme conditions, it helps you avoid the hassle of changing tyres throughout the year. In the long run, this saves money and time - making all season tyres the perfect alternative for someone looking to save some extra cash.
