An MOT test is an annual check required by law for vehicles over three years old. It ensures your vehicle meets the minimum road safety and environmental standards.
An MOT test typically takes between 45 minutes and an hour. If your vehicle requires any repairs or retesting, it may take longer. Any repair work will be discussed with you first, ensuring you are happy with the quote.
If your car fails its MOT, you'll be given a ‘refusal of an MOT test certificate’ (known as a ‘VT30’).You must have the necessary repairs done before your vehicle can pass. We can provide a quote for the required repairs and carry them out with your approval.
If your car fails its MOT and your previous MOT certificate is still valid, you can drive it to a repair centre or a pre-booked MOT retest. However, if the vehicle is deemed dangerous, you must arrange for it to be transported to the garage. Driving a car with a dangerous defect could result in a fine, penalty points, or even prosecution.
You can book your MOT test up to a month (minus one day) before your current certificate expires without losing any days from your current MOT. This ensures you have plenty of time to address any issues. You can also check when your MOT runs out on the GOV website.
With most vehicles, you do not need to bring anything specific to the MOT test. The testing centre can check your vehicle's details online. However, if you have a new registration or vehicle, bringing your vehicle's V5C logbook might be necessary.
